Universal Works

Universal Works specializes in contemporary clothing production. The company's inaugural collection was launched in 2009, with the co-founder, director, and designer David Keyte working from his kitchen table. The aim was to create genuine and honest garments that were never excessively designed.

The inspiration behind Universal Works stems from David's upbringing in a provincial Midlands town during the 1970s. Coming from a working-class family, he witnessed their affinity for workwear and weekend attire. David's experiences as an apprentice sign-writer during the 1980s, alongside the emergence of sports and music culture, provided him with valuable insights during his 20-year journey in the fashion industry. Working with notable names such as Paul Smith and Maharishi, he honed his skills and acquired knowledge from the industry's best.

Universal Works embodies the essence of David's life's work and reflects the company's DNA. It revolves around the blending of ideas, understanding heritage and context, and maintaining a strong aesthetic foundation. The company supports and promotes skilled, small-scale production, utilizing trusted and respected factories both in the UK and overseas. Collaboration is a significant aspect of Universal Works, allowing for partnerships with artists, writers, and various creative individuals, fostering continuous growth and inspiration. Starting with ten retailers, Universal Works has garnered a substantial following and expanded its reach from Los Angeles to Seoul. They currently operate three stores: UW Soho (Berwick Street, London) since August 2013, UW Kings Cross (Coal Drops Yard, London) since October 2018, and Nottingham (Derby Road, Nottingham) since January 2023.

In 2021, they opened their first standalone European store in Berlin, Germany, in collaboration with long-term stockist Truffelschwein. Additionally, Universal Works has a presence within Liquor Store in Birmingham, England. As an independent and small company, Universal Works takes pride in approaching their work with passion and a sense of humor, staying true to their values.
