UWC Adriatic
The United World College of the Adriatic, also known as UWC Adriatic, is an international school in Italy that is part of a global movement called United World Colleges. These colleges aim to bring students from around the world together to promote peace and international understanding.
UWC Adriatic, situated in the village of Duino near Trieste, Italy, hosts approximately 180 students aged 16 to 19, representing around 80 countries. Established in 1982 with support from the Italian government and regional authorities, UWC is a global educational organization that selects students based on merit, regardless of their ability to pay.
Life at UWC Adriatic can be both challenging and transformative. Students live in shared rooms in one of the seven residences scattered throughout the village. The college emphasizes co-curricular activities with a strong focus on serving others. Despite 80% of students being non-native English speakers, they all study for the full International Baccalaureate diploma in English and Italian—teachers living in the village act as personal and residence tutors, creating a close-knit community.
Inspired by the ideas of German educationalist Kurt Hahn, the UWC movement aims to use education as a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. UWC Adriatic brings together motivated young students worldwide to live and learn together. The objective is to help students become active, involved, and educated citizens whose attitudes toward international understanding and community service can contribute positively to the world.
