Victoria & Vancouver Island
The busy metropolis of Vancouver is just a 90-minute ferry trip away from British Columbia's main city, but it feels like a different planet. Victoria adopts a different stance from its youthful neighbor and emanates a cozier feel. This very small city, which is located on the southernmost point of Vancouver Island, cherishes traditions that are distinctly British, such as afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress and a pint at the local pub.
But that doesn't mean that only English speakers should visit this location. Despite its tendency toward nostalgia, this city draws a wide range of tourists with its superb museums that honor its Indigenous past, attractive architecture, and stunning harbor views (often interrupted by the surfacing of a whale).
But there's much more to this area than trimmed gardens and afternoon tea, so don't just stick to the (admittedly tacky) Inner Harbour. Long beaches and lush wineries are two more features of Vancouver Island. Drive to Sooke, a bustling boating and fishing community, from downtown Victoria, or travel to the Cowichan Valley to see rows of grape-laden vines. Just remember to pack your camera since even the most weary traveler will be wowed by the landscape.
