European Beech has spread from a few isolated refuge places in the Alps, Carpathians, Dinarides, Mediterranean, and Pyrenees over a few thousand years, in a process that is still happening, since the end of the last Ice Age. The tree's ability to adapt to many climatic, geographical and physical conditions is linked to its successful growth throughout a continent.
