Winter Sonata (2001)

The most popular drama of 2002 was Winter Sonata, which told the sad love story of Joon Sang (Bae Yong Joon) and Yu Jin (Choi Ji Woo). The plot revolves around Joon Sang and Yu Jin's tragic love tale. The film ends on a melancholy note, with Joon Sang dying in a car accident, and Yu Jin unable to forget his image because the person she loves forever and only is him.

Winter Sonata was immensely popular at the time the drama aired, with extremely high viewership rates. The film is regarded as the pinnacle of the Hallyu movement, bringing Choi Ji Woo and Bae Yong Joon enormous notoriety. Even the film's OST album has sold 2 million copies in Japan alone. The Korean tear queen's acting talent in the film, the Winter sonata earned her the 2002 Baeksang Award for Best Actress.
