The cabin is snazzy and rich with technology, but those expecting outright luxury will be disappointed.
The Performance model with Ludicrous mode would undoubtedly be the most thrilling, but it's also the most costly, and its 305-mile estimated driving range isn't as long as the less expensive Long Range model, so we'd save the $20,000 and go with the less expensive Long Range variant. The Long Range model adds 20 miles to the anticipated driving range while still feeling brisk thanks to the electric motors' immediate power delivery.
Because Tesla, unlike almost every other manufacturer, makes continuous running updates to its products throughout each calendar year, it's difficult to determine exactly what's new on 2020 Model Xs. Tesla promotes more efficient electric motors, faster charging via more robust onboard chargers, and a fully adaptive air suspension system in a blog post on its consumer site. At Germany's legendary Nürburgring race track, Tesla is also testing a new form of the Model S—the Model X's sedan relative. It also hinted to an improved powerplant and a new Plaid Option performance driving mode that could be offered on both the S and X variants in the future.

The Model Y has a major mission as Tesla's first compact SUV: appealing to luxury SUV purchasers who want an EV to replace a gas-powered option from manufacturers like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The all-wheel drive Long Range variant will have a huge battery pack that will allow up to 316 miles of driving range; performance and rear-wheel drive Long Range models will also be available. The 2020 Tesla Model Y looks like a tall version of the compact Model 3 sedan but can be outfitted with a third row of seats for a total seating capacity of seven.
The all-wheel drive Long Range and Performance variants offer 316 and 315 miles of driving range, respectively, when buying an electric car. Tesla has yet to reveal the range of its future rear-wheel-drive Long Range model. As a result, we'd recommend the all-wheel-drive Long Range, which is mid-priced and has lots of performance. Tesla gives only a few options for personalizing your Model Y, including only five exterior colors, three of which cost an extra $1000 or $2000. Also, buyers looking for the optional third row of seats will have to wait until the 2021 model year.
The 2020 Model Y lineup will eventually include a budget-friendly trim (in this case, a rear-wheel-drive version of the Long Range model), but the all-wheel-drive Long Range and Performance models will be available first. We were able to test an all-wheel-drive Long Range thanks to a generous Car and Driver reader, which clocked in at 4.4 seconds from zero to 60 mph, just 0.4 seconds slower than our long-term Model 3 sedan. Although the Model Y has amazing acceleration, it does not provide the same level of driving pleasure as the Model 3. The SUV body creates a higher center of gravity, which dulls the sharp edge of the Model 3's handling, and the Y's ride is considerably rougher over road imperfections as well.
