Aloha Medical Mission, a secular, nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization based in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, offers free health care to underserved people in the Pacific, Asia, and Hawai‘i. Established in 1983 by Drs. Ramon Sy and Ernesto Espaldon under its parent organization, it was the Philippine Medical Association. That first year, a team of physicians and nurses traveled to a small Philippines town and performed free cleft-lip surgery on children whose families were too poor to afford the operation.
Since then, the scope of surgeries has expanded to include other surgical specialties and dentistry. Medical services were attached to the missions, which grew in number and country diversity. In the past two years, missions have been sent to Burma (Myanmar), Laos, Nepal, and the Philippines.
In 2002, they established the only free dental clinic in Hawai‘i. This clinic continues on as AMM’s main health-care focus in Hawai‘i. They serve the 30 percent of the state population that lacks dental insurance and care for about 120 patients per month.

From modest beginnings in 1966 in Taiwan, the organization expanded to the USA as its first overseas organization in 1989 to spread the spirit and mission through compassion and hope.
The first appearance of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, known as Tzu Chi USA, was established in Alhambra, Calif., in 1989. It all started when Stephen Huang, a wealthy American businessman seeking personal guidance, visited Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Taiwan. The meeting changed his life. There he met a gentle nun who had created a powerful organization, and who was able to realize one seemingly impossible dream after another, solely for the benefit of others. Huang was so filled with awe and admiration that he became a disciple and vowed to bring the spirit and mission of Tzu Chi to the United States. He did just that by making Tzu Chi USA the first chapter of Tzu Chi overseas.
Tzu Chi USA began by mobilizing volunteers, then hosting “tea parties” where they could share their thoughts, experiences, and joy of volunteering. The events drew supporters and quickly inspired the creation of additional chapters. Today, Tzu Chi USA has 65 offices and facilities throughout the U.S., with volunteers and donors working tirelessly to make a difference in their communities.

In 1967, some people concerned about the growing problem of drug use among Waikiki’s young people decide to take action – They establish the Waikiki Drug Clinic. Their response to an unmet community need becomes the foundation for Waikiki Health (WH), which has been providing quality medical care and social services to vulnerable populations ever since – in Waikiki and across Oahu, with outreach services throughout the State of Hawaii.
Today, Waikiki Health provides a multi-service, multi-site non-profit agency, which still focuses on meeting community needs, providing more than 42,000 patient visits annually.
To meet the growing demand for services, they founded Makahiki Medical and Dental Clinic in McCully-Moiliili (opening in early 2014). The new site will house eight exam rooms and seven dental operatories – providing Primary Medical Care, integrated Behavioral Health and Oral Health Services.
Waikiki Health establishes a Preventive Health and Utilization Dept. – and a team-based approach to providing care – in line with their moving toward the status of a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). The PCMH model follows standardized, evidence-based guidelines for assuring quality care and improved health outcomes.
