This is the most popular class in Yale's 317-year history, and it is now open to everyone for free. In the spring of 2018, Yale Psychology Professor Laurie Santos introduced this class as "Psychology and the Good Life" to help students cope with increased levels of anxiety, sadness, and stress. The class was so popular right away that it enrolled over a quarter of all Yale undergrads in its first year.
Professor Santos designed an iteration of the course for Coursera named "The Science of Well-Being" to benefit a wider audience as demand for access to the class' content grew amid widespread media attention.
Santos has compiled all of the available psychological research and developed a step-by-step strategy for increasing happiness in this course. The course covers both positive psychology and behavioral transformation, or how to apply the principles learned in real life. The first half of the course covers common misconceptions regarding happiness, as well as psychological factors that influence our thinking. The book then delves into scientifically proven strategies for making us happier. The third section of the course gives students time, advice, and social support as they work on the final assignment, which requires them to incorporate one wellness activity, dubbed "Rewirement," into their daily lives for four weeks.
The following topics are covered in weekly instalments:
- Misconceptions About Happiness
- Why Our Expectations are so Bad
- How Can We Overcome Our Biases
- What can we do to improve our happiness?
- Putting Strategies into Practice
- Final Rewirement Challenge

- Misconceptions About Happiness

What factors influence a happy and fulfilled life? This is undoubtedly one of life's most important concerns, and one that has piqued the imagination of many of our forefathers. Buddha famously abandoned his empire in order to pursue pleasure. Several Greek thinkers (from Aristotle to Epicurus, Plato to Socrates) had different perspectives on happiness. Of course, we all have our own perspectives on happiness.
If you wanted an answer to this topic until recently, you would have had to rely on dialogues with spiritual leaders. You might have gotten lucky and based it on late-night (and possibly intoxicated) talks with friends and relatives. Fortunately, that has all changed recently. Scientists have been heavily involved in the last decade and a half. We now have a fair understanding of what it takes to live a happy and fulfilled life.
This course, based on Prof. Raj Raghunathan's (aka "Dr. Happy-smarts") award-winning class at The University of Texas at Austin's Indian School of Business and McCombs School of Business, draws content from a variety of fields, including psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral decision theory, to offer a tried and practical recipe for leading a life of happiness and fulfillment. This course offers:

Meditation, mindfulness, and introspection have been increasingly popular in recent years. They are increasingly recognized as technologies anchored in knowledge from psychology and neuroscience, rather than mystical rituals from old Buddhism or esoteric philosophy. Mindfulness has formed the foundation for a variety of therapeutic approaches, both as a medical treatment and as a way to improve well-being and enjoyment. Mindfulness has become a lifestyle option for millions of people all over the world, increasing and enriching everyday life. It's big business to be mindful.
But, exactly, what is mindfulness? Is it truly beneficial to your health? Is it possible to learn it? How can you spot a con artist? Would you like to live in a society that was aware and smelled like sandalwood? What does being aware feel like? Are you already conscious, and if so, how would you know?
This innovative course, which evolved from Leiden University's popular Honours Academy course, combines traditional scholarly inquiry from multiple disciplines (ranging from psychology to philosophy to politics) with experiential learning (including specially designed "meditation labs" where you can practice and analyze mindfulness on yourself). Finally, the course seeks to deliver a responsible, thorough, and inclusive education about (and in) mindfulness as a modern phenomena. This course offers:
