The Science of Well-Being by Yale University
This is the most popular class in Yale's 317-year history, and it is now open to everyone for free. In the spring of 2018, Yale Psychology Professor Laurie Santos introduced this class as "Psychology and the Good Life" to help students cope with increased levels of anxiety, sadness, and stress. The class was so popular right away that it enrolled over a quarter of all Yale undergrads in its first year.
Professor Santos designed an iteration of the course for Coursera named "The Science of Well-Being" to benefit a wider audience as demand for access to the class' content grew amid widespread media attention.
Santos has compiled all of the available psychological research and developed a step-by-step strategy for increasing happiness in this course. The course covers both positive psychology and behavioral transformation, or how to apply the principles learned in real life. The first half of the course covers common misconceptions regarding happiness, as well as psychological factors that influence our thinking. The book then delves into scientifically proven strategies for making us happier. The third section of the course gives students time, advice, and social support as they work on the final assignment, which requires them to incorporate one wellness activity, dubbed "Rewirement," into their daily lives for four weeks.
The following topics are covered in weekly instalments:
- Misconceptions About Happiness
- Why Our Expectations are so Bad
- How Can We Overcome Our Biases
- What can we do to improve our happiness?
