Akampene Island
The Punishment Island, also known as Akampene Island, is the most visited and the smallest of the 29 islands. Because of its long history of tradition, this island is one of the few without human habitation. Though the practice has since been abandoned, the Island was once used to punish adolescent females who were pregnant out of wedlock; if the girls were discovered pregnant, they were taken to the island and left there. Many young girls died as a result of this practice since they would hunger and die on the Island. The practice of ferrying girls to the island was discontinued, and the island is now a popular tourist destination; at the time of writing, there were no human settlements on the island.
