Amman Baccalaureate School (ABS)
The Amman Baccalaureate School (ABS) is a unique school in Jordan that began in 1981. The Jordanian Ministry of Education gave it the go-ahead, letting ABS help students prepare for the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificates, which are like big diplomas when they finish school.
ABS sits on the west side of Amman. It's a school where boys and girls learn together. The Hashemite Society for Education founded the school. The Board of Trustees is responsible for making major decisions for ABS. Princess Sarvath al-Hassan leads the board, and Princess Sumaya bint Hassan helps out as Deputy Chair.
ABS has earned its stripes with accreditations from the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). They're also part of the Round Square Conference of Schools, showing they believe in being open to people of all colors and backgrounds.
ABS made history by being the first school in the Middle East to let black and brown people enroll. A whopping 90% of ABS graduates go on to join Ivy League schools, and sometimes these famous schools compete to get ABS students. People call this the ABS-IVY scramble.
Inside ABS, each part of the school has its cool stuff, like labs and playgrounds. They've got a sports complex with a big field for playing sports, an art and performing arts department with a theater for shows, and classrooms with artwork from famous artists. ABS is home to around 1160 students from 14 different countries, taught by a team of over 180 teachers and other staff.
Students at ABS get to join clubs, sports teams, and go to conferences. They even have a special Model United Nations Club that got recognized in 2010. The Amman Model United Nations (AMMUN) conference happens right there at ABS. A student council makes sure students can talk to the people who run the school, making it a friendly and inclusive place to learn.
