Arts and Crafts
The people of Nauru dress in typical tropical attire: shorts and light shirts. Fishing is still done in the traditional way, with island anglers waiting in small light boats for fish to arrive. The tradition of fishing with trained frigatebirds has survived. Radio Nauru has a large collection of recordings of local people's music. Even elderly Nauruans, however, rarely understand the lyrics to these songs. Nauru's music reflects its Micronesian heritage. "Nauru Bwiema" is the national anthem of Nauru ("Song of Nauru"). The lyrics were written by Margaret Hendrie, and the music was composed by Laurence Henry Hicks.
While traditional culture is quickly giving way to contemporary culture in Micronesia, music and dance remain among the most popular art forms. Rhythmic singing and traditional reigen are especially performed at celebrations, and craftsmen make articles of clothing and fans out of Kokosfasern and screw tree sheets, using geometrical samples similar to those found in Indonesian culture. The wood of the kokospalme is also used in the production of arts and crafts. This things can be seen as one of Unique Cultural Characteristics In Nauru.
