Religion

The majority religion in Nauru is Christianity, with the Nauru Congregational Church being the largest denomination, accounting for 35.71% of the population as of the 2011 census. Religion freedom is a constitutional right, and the country's laws and society uphold it without significant violations.

According to the 2002 census, roughly two-thirds of Christians are Protestant, with the remainder being Catholic. The Nauru Congregational Church is the largest denomination. The ethnic Chinese on the island, who make up about 3 to 4% of the population, may be Confucian, Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, or atheist. Following the near-cease of phosphate mining in the country, the largely Christian communities of Tuvaluan and I-Kiribati expatriates were repatriated in late 2006.

Prior to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when foreign missionaries introduced Christianity to the island, Nauruan indigenous religion was the dominant religion on the island. There are a few active Christian missionary organizations, including Anglican, Methodist, and Catholic representatives.

The constitution of Nauru
guarantees freedom of conscience and expression, but it also states that these rights may be restricted by any law that is "reasonably required." To proselytize, build houses of worship, hold religious services, or officiate marriages, religious groups must register with the government. Private schools run by religious organizations are permitted. Religious groups are permitted to offer religious studies classes once a week during school hours in public schools. There are no significant societal constraints on religious freedom in Nauru, according to a 2017 US government report.
