Attaboy
Occupying the former Milk and Honey space (which opened on New Years Eve in 1999), there’s now a whole generation of drinkers who could be forgiven for thinking Attaboy has been here forever. The tucked-away Chinatown haunt, inherited by acclaimed M&H alums Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy, keeps the same bespoke protocol as its forebear: Suspender-clad drinks slingers at the brushed-steel bar mix spontaneous riffs to accommodate each patron's preferred level of alcohol.
Attaboy is tailored to drinkers who know what they like but aren't afraid to stray from it, which speaks to the attentive, astute staff. When cocktail masters like Ross and McIlroy are attending to your needs, drinkers won't be alarmed when seemingly straightforward pineapple-rum sips are spiked with dark, unexpected swirls of bitter Campari. Then they’ll be too busy trying to gulp every last drop.
The railroad-slim space is as intimate as ever, but a lengthened bar encourages a more laid-back, hang-at-the-bar type of feel. Ross and McIlroy scrapped many of the intimidating M&H statutes—the reservations-only door policy, the much-ballyhooed rules of conduct (no hats, no flirting)—in favor of accessible add-ons like a credit card machine, cans of cheap domestic beers and a slight price drop.
