Avenues: The World School is a global network of private schools designed for children from preschool to grade 12. The journey began in September 2012 in the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. York. The founders include Benno C. Schmidt, Jr., leader of Yale University, Chris Whittle, a prominent figure in the fields of media and education, and Alan Greenberg, former head of Esquire magazine.
Their vision was to create a school with unified educational planning, advanced technology, and strong support for teachers, all centrally managed from one main office. Avenues' campus is headquartered at R.C. Williams Warehouse and the project kicked off with an impressive fundraising effort, raising a remarkable $85 million. Opening with 12 classes from kindergarten to 9th grade in the 2012–2013 school year, Avenues gradually expanded to include 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, celebrating its first graduating class in 2016.
One notable aspect of Avenues is its unique early admission option, which differs from the norm at other private schools in New York City. This distinctive approach has contributed to the school's reputation for innovation. The organization and some of its students even made headlines in the 2015 documentary "Class Divide," which shed light on the challenges associated with the neighborhood's transformation.
In a significant development in October 2023, Avenues New York and Avenues São Paulo underwent a change of ownership, becoming part of the Nord Anglia family. This strategic acquisition is of great importance as Nord Anglia is recognized as a leading provider of education globally.
