Bernie Sanders's brother is active in UK politics
The seat left up by former British Prime Minister David Cameron will be filled by Larry Sanders, the elder brother of Vermont Senator and former Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders. In the by-election held on October 20 to fill Cameron's seat as MP for the Witney district in Oxfordshire, southern England, Sanders, 81, was chosen to represent the Green Party. Early in September, Cameron declared he would resign from his position as an MP.
Although Larry Sanders has lived in Oxford, United Kingdom, since 1969 and has long been involved in Green Party politics, the Sanders brothers were born in New York. In February of this year, he was chosen to serve as the party's spokeswoman on health. Sanders might draw votes in the off-year election because of his name recognition, but he is unlikely to win what is thought to be a solid conservative seat. In the 2015 election, he campaigned as a Green Party candidate for the close-by seats of Oxford West and Abingdon and finished in fifth place with a 4.4 percent vote share.
As a representative of Democrats Abroad, Sanders made a remarkable appearance at the Democratic National Convention earlier this year and voted for his younger brother Bernie. Sanders referred to their parents as loving the New Deal and stated, "I voted for Bernie Sanders with a great sense of pride."
