Broken Sword
While The Secret of Monkey Island reinvented the genre and catapulted LucasArts to the top of the adventure game market, and Monkey Island 2 vastly improved on its predecessor, Return to Monkey Island is the ideal modern homage to the point-and-click subgenre.
Guybrush Threepwood, a likeable loser in videogames, is one of the most endearing characters. His desire to dress as a swashbuckling pirate and seduce governor Elaine Marley is motivated by lofty goals. He is absolutely incompetent, has greater confidence than ability, and is an expert at taking lives. Return to Monkey Island picks up where LeChuck's Revenge leaves off and provides fans with closure after taking twenty years to complete. The foundation of the series, though, is the chemistry between George and French photojournalist Nico Collard.
Broken Sword is still among the top adventure games on the PC because of the excellent writing and voice acting. It does, however, contain the iconic "goat puzzle," which many adventure games—including all four Broken Sword sequels—have subtly parodied since. At the very least, self-awareness is half the battle.
