Buena Vista: A Delaware Country Estate
John Middleton Clayton, a US statesman, built the Buena Vista estate between 1845 and 1847. In terms of style and architecture, the site is timeless and ideal for rehearsal dinners, wedding ceremonies, receptions, and other marital events. The sophisticated and contemporary environment ensures that the happy couple and their guests have a memorable event. The entire estate, including all rooms on the first and second levels, can be reserved by couples. The site can accommodate up to 250 guests, who are all allowed to tour the estate and adjacent gardens throughout the wedding day.
The Buena Vista Conference Center is a popular venue, hosting over 300 events in 2013 and serving over 10,000 people. Buena Vista is described in Delaware Bride Magazine's fall/winter 2013-2014 edition as "the perfect wedding location," with "lush grounds, cozy accommodations, and luxe décor" that can be used for a variety of functions such as business meetings, government meetings, receptions, parties, and celebrations.
John M. Clayton, United States Secretary of State from 1849 to 1850 under Presidents Taylor and Fillmore, and United States Senator from 1829 to 1836, 1845 to 1849, and 1853 until his death in 1856, built the main section of the house between 1845 and 1847. C. Douglass Buck, governor of Delaware from 1929 to 1937 and United States senator from 1942 to 1948, later lived in the house. The Buck family donated Buena Vista and its grounds to the state in 1965, and it now serves as a state conference center run by the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs.
