Capital University
Capital University was founded in 1830 as the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio, aimed at training Lutheran pastors. It evolved to also establish an undergraduate institution in 1850, which was named Capital University.
While the university retains its affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), it operates as an independent institution, welcoming diverse traditions and faiths. Embracing the principles of spiritual wellness, Capital University emphasizes six key spiritual principles - Truth, Vocation, Innovation, Inclusion, Service, and Grace, which resonate with various religions and worldviews.
The university adopts a progressive approach, valuing free inquiry, promoting the idea that work is distinct from identity, and emphasizing the importance of fostering genuine relationships. This commitment to inclusivity, spiritual exploration, and academic excellence shapes Capital University's distinctive character as a vibrant and open-minded institution of higher learning.
