Wittenberg University
Wittenberg University, a private liberal arts college in Springfield, Ohio, was founded in 1845 by a group of ministers from the English Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio. The college's name pays homage to the historic University of Wittenberg in Germany, where Martin Luther famously posted his Ninety-five Theses in 1517.
Initially focused on training clergy, Wittenberg College later admitted women in 1874 and black individuals in 1875. In 1957, it attained university status and was renamed Wittenberg University. The institution has faced challenges throughout its history, such as controversies leading to censures from academic associations.
Wittenberg is associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is known for its small city campus and strong athletic affiliations in NCAA Division III. Today, Wittenberg University's 114-acre campus attracts around 1,326 undergraduates from various states and countries, offering a diverse and vibrant academic environment.
