Carlton Arms Hotel
The Carlton Arms Art Project, which bills itself as "Manhattan's famed art hotel," got its start in the late 1970s when a small group of creative types decided to give a dilapidated shelter some new paint and fresh ideas. The location is now a haven for bohemian travelers and a live-in gallery, with bizarre art decorating every room, bathroom, and hallway. Plan ahead because the venue fills up quickly. This eccentric, art-focused hotel is 6 minutes from Madison Square Park and the subway and 15 minutes from Union Square's nightlife.
Bright, uniquely designed rooms with quirky furnishings and vibrant, original murals by international artists. They all have en suite or shared bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. On request, linens and towels are provided. Along with the public corridors, the whimsical lobby, which is styled as a "speakeasy" from the Prohibition era, features murals and changing works of art. Carlton Arms Hotel is definitely one of the best cheap hotels in NYC.
