The oldest university in the Slovak Republic is Comenius University in Bratislava. It was formed on June 27, 1919, and followed in the footsteps of Matthias Corvinus, the Hungarian King, who established the Academia Istropolitana in Bratislava in 1465.


Comenius University in Bratislava is a modern European university celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. It is the only Slovak institution to consistently appear in worldwide rankings of the world's best universities. It has the most comprehensive range of study programs at all three levels, with several of these study programs being the only ones of their kind in Slovakia.
