Cueva del Diablo
The Devil's Cave, also known as Cueva del Diablo, one of the Most Spectacular Caves in Bolivia, is a karst cave 6 kilometers east of Potos, Bolivia. Above, the site is the San Bartolomé Chapel. The cave may be found at the bottom of a 100-meter-long ravine. The name of the cave comes from a dark streak in the rocks at the cave's entrance; legend has it that Lucifer left the mark while escaping a vision of St. Bartholomew.
The ravine was characterized as having a "demonic presence" by Bartholomew Arzáns de Orsa y Vela in 1737. By carving an image of the saint on the rocks outside the cave mouth, the Jesuits are supposed to have banished the devil from the ravine and cave.
