Drottningholm Palace
The first place in the list of the most beautiful historical sites in Sweden is Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholm Slott). It is a well-preserved royal palace in Sweden, known as the 'Versailles of Scandinavia'. The influence of Princess Louisa-Ulrika in the 18th century is what can be most clearly felt in this monument. She renovated Drottningholm Palace in the image of Versailles, inspired by the luxury of King Louis XV.
The first prototype of Drottningholm Palace was decided to build by King Johan III in the late 16th century. The king built it as a gift for his wife, Queen Katarina Jagellonika, hence its name meaning 'Island' of the Queen'. However, this palace was destroyed by a fire in 1661. So the new Drottningholm Palace was built in its place in 1662.
Since 1981, Drottningholm Palace has been the residence of the current royal family. The palace is also open to visitors. In 1991, Drottningholm Palace was a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
