Esztergom – A peek into the history of Hungary
One of the best places to visit in Hungary, Esztergom is a-must-see destination showcasing the influence of Christianity on the country. Physically, Esztergom is a city in northern Hungary, 46 kilometres (29 miles) northwest of the capital Budapest. It situates in Komárom-Esztergom county, on the right bank of the river Danube, which constitute the border with Slovakia there.
It has – the Esztergom Basilica, the largest church of Hungary and also its museum has the biggest collection of Christian relics. The city was also the capital of Hungary between the 10th and 13th centuries when King Béla IV of Hungary relocated the royal seat to Buda.
Esztergom is actually the seat of the prímás (see Primate) of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, and the former seat of the Constitutional Court of Hungary.
