Explore a desert-wide outdoor art exhibition
The third iteration of the event will take place as other significant events in Southern California are postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals in the Coachella Valley have been moved to April 2021. The BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament for this year was also postponed in the region. In a prepared statement, Desert X Executive Director Jenny Gil stated that the biennial in 2021 is "uniquely positioned to present a paradigm to enjoy art safely."
As part of the biennial outdoor art event Desert X, local and international artists frequently produce large-scale works using the desert landscape of the Coachella Valley as inspiration. These works range from billboards to a ranch-style home that is entirely mirror-like as well as towering cubes made out of yellow plastic water gallons. With regards to subjects that are universal, such as climate change and the definition of home, these commissioned pieces seek to confront our past and future possibilities. A dozen or more installations, the majority of which are free, are normally on exhibit from February through May.
