Extraordinary culture
The Tongan culture, one of the most fascinating in the South Pacific, is found in Tonga. It is one of the reasons to visit Tonga. The country takes pride in being the only one in the Pacific that has never been colonized and in being the sole monarchy in the South Pacific. Being Tongan makes it simple to integrate into the culture as soon as you walk off the airport because over 98% of the population is Tongan. The cultural excursions offered here are incredibly authentic; you won't feel like you're watching scripted talks or actors "putting on a show" (with the exception of the performances of traditional dance and music, which are, well, performances!)
You will witness elaborate wood carvings and hear the wonderful Tongan language while on vacation there. The culture that supports it is significantly older—roughly as old as the custom that males are given the responsibility of cooking instead of women. Because using the umu, Tonga's traditional oven, is not very simple. However, the baked beef that is produced there is a gastronomic highlight. The dance festivals set to Tongan music, a custom that has endured for many years, are another highlight. Rugby is the residents' pastime in addition to the kingdom's cultural legacy.
