The Faber family has owned the firm since it was founded in 1761 in Germany. It has continued to develop around the world, opening stores in New York in 1849, London in 1851, Paris in 1855, and Vienna in 1872. After a familial marriage to the count of Castell in 1990, it received the Castell component of its name.

The firm employs an estimated 7,000 people in 14 factories throughout the globe, including facilities in Asia, North America, Australia, South America, and New Zealand. Faber-Castell is a well-known and well-liked brand because of its long-standing and trustworthy reputation.
