Fight Age-Related Mental Decline and Alzheimer’s Disease
In older people, Alzheimer's disease is the major cause of dementia and the most frequent form of neurodegenerative disease. According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease will rise from 36 million to 115 million by 2050 as the global population ages. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurological disease characterized by increasing memory loss, cognitive impairment, and behavioral changes that affect daily life.
For several years, researchers have looked into the link between omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA) and brain health. DHA accounts for over 60% of the fatty acids in neuronal cell membranes. Furthermore, as compared to age-matched healthy controls, AD patients had lower brain and serum DHA levels, suggesting that DHA shortage may play a role in AD development.
