Film Forum
Located at 209 West Houston Street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, Film Forum is a nonprofit movie theater. It is known to be one of the best movie theaters in NYC. With 50 folding chairs, one projector, and a $19,000 annual budget, it started as a substitute screening room for independent movies in 1970. In 1972, Karen Cooper was appointed director. The present Greenwich Village cinema was constructed in 1990 and is located on Houston Street, west of Sixth Avenue.
There are 280,000 yearly admissions to Film Forum's four screens, which have almost 500 seats, 60 staff members, 4,500 members, and a $5 million operating budget. One of the few independently run nonprofit cinemas in the country, Film Forum is the only one in New York City. Even though it is technically located in Soho, Film Forum was recognized with a Village Award by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation in 1994. The Film Forum had a significant refurbishment in 2018, adding a fourth cinema and new seats that provide greater leg room.
