Galleri Svalbard

Svalbard Galleri was established in 1995. Permanent art and cultural treasures from Kre Tveter, the Svalbards Collection (Arctic maps, books, and coins), and the Recherche Collection are on show in the gallery (the works on expeditions from 1838 to 1839). Artwork is available for purchase, and the gallery hosts 7-8 new shows each year. There is also a collection of goods and publications in our museum shop, including art books, general Svalbard reading, and designer things. The Art Café serves coffee, tea, and a range of pleasant beverages. The Longyear Arts and Crafts Center is right next door, where local artisans display their work.

The Svalbard Collection contains books, ancient maps, and vouchers produced by the many mining firms that operated on the archipelago in the past. The collection's oldest map dates from 1570. After the discovery of Svalbard in 1596, a map based on a note by Willem Barentsz was produced in 1598, but Svalbard was not named. Aside from its historical significance, it also has documentation importance. These maps can be considered works of art in their own right historically. They're engravings that were hand-colored after being printed from copper plates. There are 1300 titles in the book collection. Many of these are historical papers of significant historical worth. Former Store Norske office manager Henrik Varming, who was born and bred on Svalbard, purchased the books and maps. The Kre Tveter Collection was founded in 1995 and serves as the foundation for Galleri Svalbard's shows. His photographs were immediately placed in a permanent collection in Longyear City after the gallery opened.

It is a place to display many old objects and ancient beauty. Not only that, but Galleri Svalbard also has a beautiful location in front of the hill, bringing peaceful beauty to the whole space. That's why Galleri Svalbard is considered one of the most beautiful historical sites in Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
