Skudeneshavn

Skudeneshavn is a Norwegian town in the Rogaland county of Karmy. It is situated at the entrance to Boknafjorden and Karmsundet on the southernmost part of the island of Karmy. The town is located in Haugaland, which is a traditional Haugaland area. From 1858 to 1965, the town was an autonomous municipality due to its position as a full municipality. The population of the 2.54 square kilometers (630 acres) town is 3,334 people, with a population density of 1,313 people per square kilometer (3,400 people per square mile) in 2019. Skudeneshavn is thus one of Norway's smallest towns (Kolvereid, with 1,470 inhabitants being the smallest). It placed second in the Nortra competition for Norway's Best Preserved Small Town in 1990.

On February 10, 1858, the community of Skudeneshavn was designated as a port town (port town). Skudeneshavn was detached from the Skudenes municipality and declared an urban municipality of its own since towns were not allowed to be part of the rural municipality. The municipality of Skudeneshavn had 1,209 residents at the time. The Schei Commission's work resulted in numerous city mergers throughout Norway during the 1960s. The town-municipality of Skudeneshavn was amalgamated into the newly constituted municipality Karmy on January 1, 1965. Skudeneshavn had 1,275 residents before the merger. Skudeneshavn had lost its town status by the time of the merger (full of it). Skudeneshavn was declared a town again by the municipality of Karmy in 1996 after the town statute was modified.

The southernmost part of the traditional Norwegian island of Karmy is home to Norway's best-preserved sailing ship village. Since the 19th century, it has been a bustling port and is now a fantastic site to visit in Norway, with plenty of breathtaking landscapes. That is why Skudeneshavn deserves to be on the list of the most beautiful historical places in Svalbard and Jan Mayen.

Visit the charming old town, which is lined with wooden cottages, meandering tiny lanes (barely traffic-free) and moored marinas, as well as cafes, stores, and galleries. Expect to see around 200 white wooden structures that have been meticulously renovated and maintained by their owners.
