Globalization: A Very Short Introduction

Professor of Sociology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Global Professorial Fellow at Western Sydney University, Manfred B. Steger holds both positions. He also worked for the US Department of State as a globalization consultant. Twenty-seven works on globalization and social theory are written by him or edited by him, including Globalization Matters: Engaging the Global in Uncertain Times, Globalisms: Facing the Populist Challenge, and The Rise of the Global Imaginary (all published by Rowman & Littlefield) (with Paul James, Cambridge University Press, 2019).

Today's world is interconnected, where everyday people can instantly become famous to fans thousands of miles away online, where influential religious figures can have a global impact on millions of people, where environmental and climate change is being caused by humans, and where complex social forces converge across continents. This is globalization.

Manfred B. Steger examines the main aspects of globalization—economic, political, cultural, ideological, and ecological—in the fifth edition of his best-selling A Very Short Introduction, one of the best books on international relations. He examines its sources and effects and tackles the contentious issue of whether globalization is ultimately beneficial or detrimental. Steger examines the unprecedented levels of global integration that exist now as well as the current issues brought on by resurgent national populism. Topics covered include climate change, the Ebola virus, Donald Trump, Twitter, trade disputes, and China's rising global profile. There are hundreds of books in practically every topic area in Oxford University Press's Very Short Introductions series. These small books are just what you need to quickly advance in a new field. Our knowledgeable authors mix information, analysis, perspective, fresh thinking, and zeal to make complex subjects easily readable.
