Grande Mosquée d'Agadez
Agadez Mosque, also known as Grande Mosquée d'Agadez, is a prominent mosque located in the downtown area of Agadez, Republic of Niger. It was built in 1515 during the time of the Songhai Empire and has been the central location of this city and also the gathering place of Niger prayers for many centuries.
With its slightly curved form, this central temple in Agadez is accompanied by a minaret about 27 meters (89 feet) high. It is the tallest temple ever built of mud bricks and is regarded as a lighthouse that acts as a compass for people to navigate the city, at one point in its history, used as a watchtower.
It was partially remodeled in 1844, an indication of the harshness of the desert environment. However, the Agadez mosque will continue to invite visitors to be mesmerized by the beauty with which it shines. It is one of the most beautiful historical sites in Niger.
