It was started in 2009 in Annecy, France, and was headquartered in Richmond, California, before being purchased by Deckers Brands in 2013. In contrast to the minimalist shoe trend that was growing fashionable at the time, Hoka first attracted recognition in the running market by developing shoes with enormous outsoles, termed "maximalist" shoes.
