Hwang Jin Yi
The film is the story of the life of the beautiful and intelligent Hwang Jin Yi (Ha Ji Won). Born to a gisaeng mother and a noble father, Hwang Jin Yi was left behind in a temple by her mother because she did not want to become a gisaeng like her. One day, she happened to see some gisaengs at the market and wanted to be one of them. That prompted her to go to a gisaeng's house, where she met her mother for the first time. Jin Yi shows outstanding talent in playing the geomungo (a traditional Korean musical instrument) and dancing. She then falls in love with Eunho, a man from a powerful noble family.
Although they love each other, they can't get over the fact that they come from different backgrounds and are vehemently opposed by everyone. In the end, Eunho had to die from a broken heart. Unable to forget his first love Eunho, Jin Yi lives a life of suffering because of alcohol. She drank all day and lost interest in dancing. In a drunken stupor, she decides to commit suicide but is saved by Jeonghan. From there, he became her new life and love.
