Jersey Battle of Flowers

The Battle of Flowers is one of the most famous festivals in Jersey, and it allows the island to show off its greatest floats, performers, and dancers. Battle weekend is a joy for all, with many residents participating and many visitors travelling to Jersey for 'The Battle' year after year. The Battle of Flowers takes place in early August every year.

The origins of the Battle lie in 1902, during the coronation of Kind Edward Vll and Queen Alexandra. The Battle Islanders decided to hold a parade in their honor, with flower-covered horse-drawn floats taking to Jersey's coastal streets. Flowers were picked from the floats and thrown to the audience as a custom; this rapidly evolved into flowers being thrown back, and the 'Battle of the Flowers' was formed.

The Battle of Flowers was put on hold during the Second World War and the German occupation, but was resurrected in the 1950s and has been growing ever since. The Battle of Flowers is now a communal event that incorporates the entire island and draws thousands of tourists each year. Floats of all sizes compete for a range of medals and honors, with the Prix d'Honneur going to the winner of the large float class.
