Kenya Petroleum Refineries

Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL) is a Kenyan oil refinery headquartered in Mombasa. Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited is currently managed by the Kenyan government. It was opened in 1960 by the Kenyan government together with Shell and British Petroleum Co (BP). As of June 2016, 100% of the shares are owned by the Kenyan government.


KPRL was established in 1960. It was originally established by Shell and BP to distribute and supply oil products to the East Africa region. Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited was incorporated as East African Oil Refineries Limited. The first refinery building with distillation, hydraulic treatment, catalyst conversion and bitumen production units opened in 1963. In 1974, another refinery was added. In 1971, the Kenyan government decided to buy a 50% stake from Royal Dutch Shell. In 1983, the company's name was changed to Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited.
