Kinshasa
Kinshasa, the capital and biggest francophone city in the world, is renowned as one of the most beautiful historical sites in Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Kinshasa, which was once a collection of fishing and trade villages along the Congo River, is today one of the world's fastest-growing megacities. It confronts Brazzaville, the capital of the Congo's neighboring Republic; the two cities are the world's second-closest capital pair (after Vatican City and Rome). Kinshasa is also one of the 26 provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Because the city-official province's limits encompass such a large region, over 90% of the land is rural, and the urban area covers just a small but growing piece on the western side.
The Central Bank of the Congo is located on Boulevard Colonel Tshatshi, just across from Laurent Kabila's Mausoleum and the presidential palace.
The Gecamines Commercial Building (previously SOZACOM) and Hotel Memling skyscrapers; L'ONATRA, the spectacular Ministry of Transport building; the central market; and the Limete Tower are all notable landmarks of the city. New structures on the Boulevard du 30 Juin, such as the Crown Tower (on Batetela) and the Congofutur Tower, are transforming the landscape of Kinshasa.
