  1. Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's southern corner, bordering the Zambian border, is the most beautiful historical sites in the country. Lubumbashi, the headquarters and largest city of the Haut-Katanga Province, is the region's mining centre, serving as a hub for many of the country's top mining businesses. Although no exact population numbers are available, the city's urban area is expected to have a population of roughly 2,584,000 in 2021.

In 1910, the Belgian government founded the modern-day administration in Élisabethville (sometimes Elizabethville, both in French, or Elisabethstad in Dutch), which was named after Queen Elisabeth, the Belgians' consort. By that time, the Belgian Congo had been renamed when the government had taken over the territory from King Leopold II. Vice-Governor-General Emile Wangermée picked this location because of its closeness to the Etoile du Congo copper mine and the Union Minière du Haut Katanga copper ore smelting oven on the neighboring Lubumbashi River.

    Bukavu

Bukavu is a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), located on the extreme south-western border of Lake Kivu, west of Cyangugu in Rwanda and separated by the Ruzizi River's discharge. It is the seat of the South Kivu province, with an estimated population of 806,940 people in 2012.

Bukavu is part of the historic area of the Bushi Kingdom and this is one of the most beautiful historical sites in Democratic Republic of the Congo. When the first Arabs, then Europeans, came in Bushi at the end of the 19th century, it was administered by a "Muluzi" Nyalukemba. In Shi's language, 'Muluzi' or 'Baluzi' in plural signifies 'the nobleman' or 'nobility.' Bukavu was known as "Rusozi" before the Europeans arrived in the Bushi Kingdom. Bukavu is derived from the term 'bu 'nkafu' (cow farm) in Mashi, the Bashi language. The Belgian colonial government created Bukavu in 1901. After Vice Governor-General Paul Costermans, the town was renamed "Costermansville" (in French) or "Costermansstad" (in Dutch) in 1927. It was renamed back to Bukavu in 1953.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bukavu (Catholic Church), Kimbanguist Church, Baptist Community of Congo (Baptist World Alliance), Baptist Community of the Congo River (Baptist World Alliance), Assemblies of God, Province of the Anglican Church of the Congo (Anglican Communion), Presbyterian Community in Congo are among the places of worship (World Communion of Reformed Churches). There are also mosques for Muslims.

  3. Kinshasa, the capital and biggest francophone city in the world, is renowned as one of the most beautiful historical sites in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Kinshasa, which was once a collection of fishing and trade villages along the Congo River, is today one of the world's fastest-growing megacities. It confronts Brazzaville, the capital of the Congo's neighboring Republic; the two cities are the world's second-closest capital pair (after Vatican City and Rome). Kinshasa is also one of the 26 provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Because the city-official province's limits encompass such a large region, over 90% of the land is rural, and the urban area covers just a small but growing piece on the western side.

The Central Bank of the Congo is located on Boulevard Colonel Tshatshi, just across from Laurent Kabila's Mausoleum and the presidential palace.

The Gecamines Commercial Building (previously SOZACOM) and Hotel Memling skyscrapers; L'ONATRA, the spectacular Ministry of Transport building; the central market; and the Limete Tower are all notable landmarks of the city. New structures on the Boulevard du 30 Juin, such as the Crown Tower (on Batetela) and the Congofutur Tower, are transforming the landscape of Kinshasa.

  4. Kisangani (previously Stanleyville or Stanleystad) is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Tshopo province. It is the country's fifth most populated metropolitan region, with an expected population of 1,312,000 in 2021, and the largest of the Congo's tropical woodland towns.

Kisangani is the farthest navigable point upstream, at 2,100 kilometers (1,300 miles) from the Congo River's mouth. After Kinshasa, Kisangani is the country's most important interior port, serving as a key economic hub for river and land traffic as well as a major marketing and distribution center for the country's north-eastern region. Since the late 1800s, it has served as the northern Congo's commercial capital.

Aside from inexpensive motorcycles, given the city's remoteness in the forest (and very challenging paths to maneuver here), there are remarkably few automobiles in the city. The majority of residents walk or use bicycles to get about (and similar wheeled contraptions). Petrol is a costly commodity.

Taxis are difficult to come by. If you need to drive across town (or to the airport), make car rental reservations a day or two ahead of time! Expect to pay USD20-40 for a taxi to the airport. Many motorbike owners will let you get aboard for a modest fee if you don't mind getting a little dirty/dusty and hanging on for dear life.
