Kohl's Corporation owns and operates Kohl's, an American department store retailer. With 1,158 locations, it is the largest department store chain in the United States, with stores in every state except Hawaii. Maxwell Kohl, a Polish immigrant, launched the company in 1927 when he opened a corner grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

It grew into a popular chain in the area, and the company expanded by constructing its first department store in 1962. In 1972, while the Kohl family was still in charge, British American Tobacco Corporation acquired a majority position in the company. The company has been in the S & P 500 and the Fortune 500 since 1998.
