Lahaina Jodo Mission
The Lahaina Jodo Mission was located on Ala Moana Street, just a few blocks away from the main attractions of Lahaina. This mission is a serene and must-visit destination on the island. The concept of creating an authentic Buddhist temple in Maui, inspired by Japan's great temples, was born from the dedicated members of the Lahaina Jodo Mission.
Constructed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants' arrival in Hawaii, the massive Buddha and the Temple Bell were dedicated in June 1968. Situated on Puunoa Point in Lahaina, Hawaii, the temple offers breathtaking views of Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe in the distance.
Unique Buddhist architectural structures, such as the solid copper shingles covering the roofs, make the Lahaina Jodo Mission a remarkable sight. Handcrafted copper shingles form a complete sheathing for the roof, adding to the temple's distinct character. The temple walls showcase five magnificent Buddhist murals, complemented by floral ceiling paintings that were later added.
At the heart of the mission lies the Amida Buddha statue, a monumental creation standing at 12 feet tall and weighing three and a half tons. Crafted in Kyoto, Japan, between 1967 and 1968, this statue is the largest outside Japan and remains a highly visited site in the country.
