Both Land O'Lakes, Inc. and California Dairies, Inc. claimed sales of $4 billion in 2019. The Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association, which became Land O'Lakes in 1921, is a cooperative that began in 1921. The association now has over 1,700 dairy farmers as members. The co-op produces products under their own private label and works with other labels such as Alpine Lace, Kozy Shack, and Vermont Creamery on a contract basis.

Through its dairy foods business, the co-op is one of the largest producers of butter and cheese in the United States; through its Purina Animal Nutrition (Purina Mills) business, the co-op serves producers, animal owners, and their families through more than 4,700 local cooperatives, independent dealers, and other large retailers; and delivers seed, crop protection products, agricultural services, and agronomic insights to 1,300 locally owned and operated cooperative and independent agronomic businesses.
