Legal Services of Northern Michigan
Legal Services of Northern Michigan (LSNM) is a nonprofit organization that helps people with legal issues. They give free, good-quality advice and representation to those who qualify. They have a team of 15 experienced lawyers and support staff who work in seven offices across 36 counties in Northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
LSNM assists individuals and families dealing with problems like consumer issues, family matters, housing troubles, government benefits, and more. Their clients often face challenges like poverty, housing discrimination, domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse. LSNM is led by a Board of Directors, which includes lawyers, former clients, and representatives from partner agencies. They hold meetings every three months to discuss important matters.
Funding for LSNM comes from grants provided by the government and private donations. Due to limited resources, LSNM must make tough decisions about which cases to take. The board, funders, and clients help set priorities for the issues they handle.
LSNM offers a variety of legal services to low-income individuals and families. They aim to address the legal needs of people and seniors in Northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Depending on the situation, a client might only need information or advice. In other cases, a legal problem may require in-depth research, discussion, or formal representation in court. LSNM's staff can advise, answer questions, prepare documents, negotiate settlements, and represent clients in court.
Additionally, LSNM staff can meet with groups of clients to talk about legal matters or work with community organizations. Someone with an urgent legal need should contact a local LSNM office to see what services are available.
