Legal Services of South Central Michigan

Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) is a non-profit group that helps low-income people in the South Central Michigan area. Their main job is providing free legal help to individuals and families who cannot afford it. They focus on preventing homelessness, stopping domestic violence, and helping people get healthcare, food, and income support.

LSSCM wants to assist those who might face difficulties getting legal help because of money problems. Besides helping individuals with specific issues, LSSCM is part of a network of organizations that support the community's most vulnerable members. They also work to change things that make it hard for low-income people.

LSSCM provides general legal help for low-income individuals and seniors in 13 counties in south and central Michigan. They have offices in Lansing, Ypsilanti, Battle Creek, Jackson, and Monroe. They also have smaller offices in other counties. LSSCM prioritizes urgent cases involving keeping families safe, protecting homes from being taken away, maintaining financial stability, and getting support for children.

Additionally, LSSCM helps groups facing legal issues, such as protecting older adults from dishonest contractors and assisting people with disabilities in getting medical care and other essential services that make a big difference in their lives.

In the areas served by LSSCM, over 542,000 individuals (32% of the population) can get free legal help. In 2016, LSSCM assisted 21,242 people with critical legal needs like evictions, foreclosures, healthcare access, jobs, family matters, debts, and food assistance. During the same time, LSSCM helped 3,666 survivors of domestic violence and their families with 1,287 cases.
