If you want to take a break from Helsinki's stylized bars and typical drink menus? Then head to Liberty or Death, a new boutique cocktail bar that's sweeping the Helsinki drinking scene by storm. If you can locate the unassuming entry (it's on a busy street, but it's incredibly easy to miss) in Helsinki's design area, you'll enter through the door and into what feels like another period. To compensate for the gloom, shelves are loaded with books and spice jars, and the bar is littered with old-world gear, from gigantic hourglasses to ancient oil lamps and antique cocktail equipment. Regulars may even rent a drawer in the antique chest to house their own booze stash.

The main light source in the lounge room-style bar is candles jammed in vintage liquor bottles, and the jazzy soundtrack adds to the old-world ambiance. The changing cocktail menu is very inventive, with titles like Jabberwocky, Mutineer, and Before They Are Hanged. This is the place to go if you want rare spirits and creative flavor combinations. The bartenders, who are tastefully outfitted in 1920s-era garb, can gladly prepare one of your particular favorites as well. Low benches, high tables, and a few bar stools are available for seating, but if you're sitting near one of the exposed brick walls, feel around to check whether any of the bricks are loose.
