The enhanced Nintendo Switch port Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released worldwide on April 28, 2017. This version includes all of the original game's content as well as new content, gameplay tweaks, and 1080p graphics at 60 frames per second. In addition to the features listed above, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe includes eight new arenas, six new playable characters, more Kart parts for customization, and the ability to carry two items at once.

When it was released, this ported version received critical acclaim, with praise directed toward the revamped battle mode and a number of improvements over the Wii U version. With over 23 million sales worldwide, Mario Kart 8 became one of the best-selling games of 2017 on Amazon and is currently the best-selling Nintendo Switch game. Along with local multiplayer, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports online multiplayer, however, voice chat is only available with friends online. Miiverse features have been removed from the game, although downloading ghost data from friends or top players is still possible.
