Mateba Island
Mateba Island is a significant river island located near to the Congo River's mouth. The entire island is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, although the southern riverbank is in Angola. On the island, there are at least two communities, one on the south coast and the other on the north coast.
The Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature has imported Blue wildebeest, Waterbuck, Burchell's zebras, and even giraffes to Mateba Island. In collaboration with "Wildlife Vets Namibia," the animals were transported from Namibia. Because Mateba Island was once a rainforest reserve, this decision is divisive. And the partially savanne that now exists is because of deforestation. Except for the four giraffes, who died after three weeks of being offloaded due to a lack of Acacia trees such as Vachellia and Senegalia.
