Mbamu Island
Mbamu is a small island in the Pool Malebo, a vast lake formed by the Congo River expansion. The beautiful island is part of the Congo Republic's territory (Congo Brazzaville). Mbamu is a demilitarized zone formed under the neutral administration established in the Franco-Belgian Convention of 1908, when these two countries ruled over territory on both sides of the Congo River as colonial rulers.
The Malebo Pool covers an area of 180 km2. Downriver are two national capitals: Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, is located to the northwest along the river. Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is located to the south of the pool and river (Congo-Kinshasa).
