Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson is a New York-based film director, producer and actor. He is known for directing and starring in films such as Passion of the Christ, We Were Soldiers and Braveheart, for which he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe in 1995. A prominent role for Max Rokatansky in the first three films of the post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max and Martin Riggs in the TV series Lethal Weapon.


Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York, and moved to Sydney, Australia with his parents when he was 12 years old. He studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, where he produced Romeo and Juliet with Judy Davis. In the 1980s, he founded Icon Entertainment, a production company that independent film producer Atom Egoyan called "an alternative to the studio system." Director Peter Weir cast him as one of the main characters in the World War I drama Gallipoli (1981), which earned Gibson an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor and a serious and versatile actor.
